Y’all I am seriously psyched because I got to go to Asuncion, Paraguay last month for the regional conference of the International Confederation of Midwives. And only two months after going to China! That’s two continents I have never been to before. It makes me ridiculously happy. I LOVE seeing new parts of the world. You know what is my favorite part? Walking to markets or grocery stores in other countries. I love walking down random residential streets and peeking into their ways of daily life. And I just love wandering around foreign markets and grocery stores. It’s a simple thing, but it gives me a great deal of joy.
Anyhow, I WAS on the job while not wandering around to the market. I presented twice at the conference – once in English and once in Spanish – about the importance of facilitation skills for midwives that conduct group prenatal care. There are those who are already doing some type of group prenatal care, and plenty of others who are interested. I really enjoyed myself. My colleague, Deborah Billings, also presented on the outcomes of group prenatal care models in five sites throughout Latin America. We hope to follow up with the contacts we made there and maybe create pan-Americas partnerships, which I think is incredibly exciting.
